Birmingham City have entered the race to sign Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Ashley Phillips, joining Sheffield United in the pursuit of the highly-rated 19-year-old.

Phillips, who joined Spurs from Blackburn Rovers in a deal worth around £2 million, is expected to head out of the club this summer, either on loan to gain valuable first-team experience or on a permanent deal if the asking price is met.
Despite training regularly with Tottenham’s senior squad, opportunities were limited under Ange Postecoglou before a season-long loan with Stoke in the Championship.
Sheffield United have been monitoring Phillips closely and have been linked with a move for the defender.
However, Birmingham City have now made their interest known, with new manager Chris Davies reportedly keen to bolster his back line with pace, athleticism, and technical ability — all attributes Phillips possesses in abundance.
Known for his composure on the ball and maturity beyond his years, the England U20 international impressed during his time at both Blackburn and Stoke City.
The battle to secure Phillips’ signature is heating up. Sheffield United can offer an immediate push for promotion, while Birmingham’s rebuild under Davies could provide a clearer path to regular starts and an outside shot at finishing in the top 6.
Phillips is expected to leave Spurs before the window closes, but both clubs are keen on adding the centre back to their ranks as early as possible in pre-season.
