Wrexham are preparing a bold £5 million bid to sign Nottingham Forest midfielder Lewis O’Brien, as the ambitious Welsh side continue their rapid rise through the EFL.

O’Brien, 26, spent the second half of last season on loan at Swanea, impressing with his energy, ball-carrying ability, and box-to-box presence. With Forest open to permanent offers for the midfielder, Wrexham are ready to pounce — and are reportedly willing to pay a club-record fee to bring him to the Racecourse Ground.

Sources close to the deal suggest that talks are expected to accelerate this week, with Wrexham’s American ownership group — led by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney — backing manager Phil Parkinson with significant funds as the club pushes for another promotion.

If completed, the deal would signal Wrexham’s clearest intent yet to compete at the top end of the Championship and beyond.

O’Brien joined Nottingham Forest from Huddersfield Town in 2022 but struggled to break into Steve Cooper’s Premier League side, spending time on loan in the MLS with D.C. United before returning to England.

Despite limited top-flight action, he remains highly rated within EFL circles and is seen as a player with both Championship quality and untapped potential.

The proposed £5 million fee would eclipse Wrexham’s current record signing. O’Brien is believed to be open to the move, though other Championship clubs are also monitoring his situation.

As Wrexham aim to build a squad capable of competing at a higher level, the pursuit of Lewis O’Brien could be a statement of serious ambition — and one that sends ripples through the EFL.
